People who follow this path often give up worldly pleasures. They might choose to live in poverty or own very few items. This is often done to reach spiritual goals. Some people want to find inner peace or a connection to a divine being. They may spend a lot of time in prayer or meditation. Some even use this lifestyle to break free from addictions. This might include things like alcohol, drugs, or even certain types of food.

There are different ways to practice this lifestyle. One way is called natural asceticism. This involves living with extreme simplicity. A person might wear very plain clothes or sleep on a floor. They might also eat very small amounts of food. This way does not involve hurting the body. Another way is called unnatural asceticism. This includes much harder practices. Some people might use self-punishment to discipline their bodies. They might do things like sleeping on a bed of nails. These people believe that purifying the body helps purify the soul.

The word ascetic comes from an ancient Greek term. This word originally meant training or exercise. It was used to describe the physical training for athletes. Later, the meaning changed to describe religious training. Many different groups have used these ideas throughout history. In India, you can find these practices in Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism.

In the Abrahamic religions, you see it in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Ancient Greek philosophers like the Stoics also practiced it. Some traditions, like Zoroastrianism, actually choose to avoid these practices. They prefer to focus on family life and good deeds.

In Christianity, many famous people lived as ascetics.

Anthony the Great is known as a father of Christian monasticism. Some lived in the desert as hermits or anchorites. Others lived in groups in places like Mount Athos. In Islam, the tradition is found in Sufi groups. These groups have cherished ascetic ways for several centuries. In the Baháʼí Faith, followers seek a high moral standard. However, they do not practice extreme asceticism. They believe people should enjoy the beauties and joys of the world.

Asceticism shows how people look for meaning in different ways. It links to the idea of self-discipline. Many people believe that having fewer wants brings more freedom. It can lead to clearer thoughts and better focus. Some people live in groups, like monks or nuns. Others choose to live alone in a cabin or a cave.
