Many people choose this life because of their religious beliefs. They often want to focus on prayer and quiet thought. In many faiths, this way of life is called eremitism. Some people also use the words anchorite, recluse, or solitary. Today, the word hermit is used in a more general way. It can describe anyone who lives apart from society for any reason.

In the Christian tradition, this life has deep roots. It was often inspired by stories from the Old Testament. These stories describe people wandering in the desert to change their hearts. For many Christians, living alone is a way to focus on God. Some hermits live in religious groups or institutes. Others live as diocesan hermits under the direction of a bishop. The Roman Catholic Church even has specific laws for these people.

History shows us many famous examples of people living this way. In the 3rd century, Paul of Thebes was a known Christian hermit in Egypt. He is often called St. Paul the first hermit. Later, in the 4th century, Antony of Egypt became very famous. A writer named Athanasius of Alexandria wrote a biography about him. In the past, these hermits lived in caves or small buildings called hermitages. They might live in a desert or deep in a forest.

Some hermits lived very close to the center of town. In the Middle Ages, they might work as ferrymen or gate keepers. Other people, called anchorites, lived in small cells built against a church. A bishop would often perform a ceremony to brick up the door.

These people had a tiny window to hear church services. They also had another window to receive food from their neighbors. This allowed them to stay in solitude while still being cared for. Some people even visited them to ask for spiritual advice.

Many different religions have people who live a similar life. Followers of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam may live as hermits too. These people often follow an ascetic way of life. This means they live with very few worldly things.

In Taoism, you can also find people living this way. Whether for religion or just for peace, the life of a hermit is a very old tradition. It shows how humans seek quiet and meaning in different ways.
