Many people choose this life for their faith. They want to focus on prayer and quiet.

In the past, some Christian hermits lived in Egypt. Paul of Thebes was one of the first. Another famous person was Antony of Egypt. These hermits often lived in caves or small homes. We call these homes hermitages.

Some lived in tiny huts built against a church. These people were called anchorites. They had a small window to hear church services. They also had a window to get food from neighbors.

Other religions have people who live this way too. Followers of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam may live as hermits. They often live an ascetic life. This is a way of life with very few things.
