It is a home for monks or nuns. These people live in a religious order. An abbot or abbess leads the group.

Some abbeys are closed to the public. Others welcome visitors. Many abbeys have many buildings on their land. They might have a church, a kitchen, and a dining hall. Some even have schools or guest houses.

Abbeys often try to be self-sufficient. This means they make what they need. They use their skills to help others. They might feed the poor or teach children.

Long ago, many people lived alone to pray. These people were called ascetics. They lived in simple huts or caves. Later, people joined them to form groups. In Egypt, Saint Pachomius helped organize these groups. He built many cells for monks to sleep in. He also built large halls for common needs. This helped create a way of life where monks live together. In Europe, Benedict of Nursia started a famous way of life. He built the first abbey at Monte Cassino in 529 AD. Many more abbeys were built after that.
