One job is to look after holy buildings. This includes mosques, churches, and temples. These groups also pay religious leaders. Leaders might be imams, priests, or rabbis. They also help set rules for followers. They may decide who can join the group.

Rules for these groups change by country. In some places, the government helps religions. In other places, religions must be private. In France, the state does not pay for religions. However, groups can register to avoid certain taxes. Some groups in France may also run schools.

In the United States, these are called faith-based organizations. In Croatia, religious groups have many rights. They can run schools or teach classes. They can also visit people in hospitals or prisons. To start a new group in Croatia, a community needs 500 believers. They must also show they have existed for five years. These groups get money from gifts and donations.
