geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Königssee is a natural lake in Germany. It sits in the state of Bavaria. The lake is near the border of Austria. It is part of the Berchtesgaden Alps. Glaciers made this lake during the last ice age. It is the third deepest lake in Germany.

Most of the lake is in a national park. High mountains rise up from the water. These mountains are very steep. Some walls reach up to 1,800 meters. This makes the lake look like a fjord. A fjord is a long, narrow part of the sea between high cliffs.

The water is very clear and clean. To keep it pure, boats must use electric motors. You can also use rowing boats or pedal boats. People visit to hike or take boat tours. A boat trip to Salet can take two hours. You can also visit St. Bartholomä. This is a famous church on a small piece of land.

The lake has a special echo. Sound bounces off the tall rock walls. People often play a trumpet to hear it. The sound can bounce back up to seven times. This makes it sound like many people are playing at once.
