It sits on the border of Upper Austria and Styria. Parts of it are also in Salzburg. People call it the three-state mountain. It is the second-highest peak in the Northern Limestone Alps. The main top is 5,652 meters high.

The mountain is made of limestone rock. This rock has many fossils in it. Some fossils look like cow tracks. They are called Kuhtritte. The mountain also has many deep caves. Some are among the largest in Austria.

There are large glaciers on the mountain. These are big fields of ice. They are the largest in the Northern Limestone Alps. However, these glaciers are shrinking fast. They might all be gone in 80 years. The Hallstatt glacier has moved back over 1 km since 1908.

Many people like to climb the mountain. Peter Karl Thurwieser first reached the top in 1834. The south side of the mountain is very steep. It drops straight down to the valley floor. In good weather, up to 100 climbers may be on the mountain at once.
