Karst is a type of land made by dissolving rock.

This usually happens in carbonate rocks like limestone. Carbonate rocks are types of stone that can melt in water.

How does it happen? It starts with rain. As rain falls through the air, it picks up carbon dioxide. This makes the water a weak carbonic acid.

When this water hits the ground, it flows into cracks in the rock. The acid melts the stone away. Over a long time, these cracks grow into big holes and deep caves.

This process creates many strange shapes. On the surface, you might see sinkholes. These are deep pits in the ground. You might also see disappearing streams. These rivers flow into a hole and vanish underground. Some water even comes back up in a spring.

Because water moves underground, the surface can be very dry. There may be few lakes or rivers on top. Instead, the water stays in huge underground systems called aquifers. These systems hold a lot of water in large pipes made of stone.
