Limestone forms in a few ways. One way is through living things. Corals and shells pile up on the sea floor. Over time, these bits turn into rock. This has happened for 540 million years. Another way is when minerals fall out of water. This is called precipitation.

This rock often holds fossils. Fossils help scientists study ancient life. Limestone is usually white or gray. It can also be black or red. Rain can wear the rock away. This creates karst landscapes and deep caves.

People use limestone for many tasks. It helps make cement for concrete. It is used for road bases. Some limestone is used in toothpaste and paint. It even holds 30% of the world's petroleum.
