Carbonate rocks are a special group of rocks.

They are made mostly of carbonate minerals. There are two main types. The first is limestone. Limestone is made of calcium carbonate. This can be calcite or aragonite.

Calcite is often found on the seafloor. Aragonite is often used by living things for shells. These rocks help us learn about Earth's history. For example, corals use aragonite to build skeletons. Scientists study these skeletons to learn about past climates. This study is called paleoclimatology.

Another type is dolostone. It is made of dolomite. This rock has calcium and magnesium in it. Some dolostone has iron in it, too. This is called ferroan dolomite.

Humans use these rocks in many ways. We use limestone powder to make concrete. This helps us build big things. However, making concrete can let out carbon dioxide. This gas can affect the greenhouse effect. Carbonate rocks can also change into other rocks. When they change, they can become marble.
