Rocks like limestone hold a lot of calcium. Rain and rivers slowly break these rocks down. This puts calcium into the water.

In the ocean, many tiny animals use it. They turn calcium into shells and hard parts. When these animals die, they sink to the bottom. Their shells pile up and turn into limestone rock over a long time.

Calcium also helps living things work. Plants drink calcium from the soil. It travels up through tiny tubes called xylem. This helps plant walls stay strong.

Today, the ocean is becoming more acidic. This happens because of more carbon dioxide in the air. This acid can break down shells. This makes it hard for sea life to live.
