Phosphorus is a key part of life. It helps make DNA. It also helps make strong bones and teeth.

Most phosphorus stays in rocks and soil. It does not move through the air much. This makes the phosphorus cycle very slow.

Rocks like apatite hold a lot of phosphorus. Over long times, weathering breaks these rocks down. Weathering is when rain and wind wear rocks away. This lets phosphorus move into the soil.

Plants take up this phosphorus to grow. Animals then eat the plants. When plants and animals die, they decay. This puts phosphorus back into the soil.

Sometimes, water carries phosphorus into lakes and oceans. This is called runoff. Too much phosphorus in the water can cause problems. It can lead to algae blooms. These are large growths of tiny water plants.

Humans also change this cycle. We mine phosphorus to make fertilizer for farms.

This helps plants grow, but it can also change how the cycle works in nature.
