Phosphorus cycle

earth science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Phosphorus is a vital part of life on Earth. It helps build important molecules like DNA and RNA. These molecules hold the instructions for how living things work. Phosphorus also helps make ATP, which is a way cells store energy. In animals, it is a key part of bones and tooth enamel. It even helps make the cell membranes that protect every living cell.

The way phosphorus moves is a very slow cycle. It mostly stays in rocks, soil, and water. Unlike other cycles, phosphorus does not move through the air much. This is because it does not turn into a gas easily. Most phosphorus is found as a substance called orthophosphate. This is a form that plants can use to grow.

One way the cycle works is through weathering. This happens when rain and wind wear down rocks like apatite. As these rocks break, they release phosphorus into the soil. Plants then take up this phosphorus through their roots. Animals eat the plants to get the phosphorus they need. When plants and animals die, they decay and return phosphorus to the ground.

Water also plays a big role in moving phosphorus. Runoff can carry phosphorus from the land into rivers and lakes. In the ocean, tiny organisms called phytoplankton use it to grow. Some phosphorus eventually settles into deep ocean sediments. Over thousands of years, tectonic movements can lift these sediments back up. This process brings the phosphorus back to the surface to start again.

Humans have changed how this cycle works in nature. We mine phosphorus minerals to make fertilizer for farms. This helps crops grow much faster. However, too much phosphorus can wash into lakes and oceans. This can cause eutrophication, which is when there is too much food for tiny water plants. This leads to massive algae blooms that can change the water.
