Geochemical cycle

earth science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Earth moves its parts in a big way. This way is called a geochemical cycle. It moves elements like silicon and aluminium. These elements move between the deep Earth and the surface.

One way this happens is through subduction. This is when one tectonic plate sinks under another. The plate goes down into the mantle. This causes many chemical changes.

Another way is through volcanism. This happens when plates move apart. A rift forms in the ground. Molten rock called magma erupts to the surface. This magma cools to make igneous rocks.

If the rock cools on the surface, it is extrusive. If it cools inside the Earth, it is intrusive. These cycles take a very long time. They can change oceans and continents.

Earth is a closed system for matter. This means matter is not made or destroyed. It only moves and changes. The same matter stays on Earth since it was formed.
