It is made of tiny grains called ooids. These grains are small and round. They have many layers like a tiny ball. Most ooids are made of calcium carbonate. This is a mineral found in many shells.

Ooids grow in a very special way. It starts with a small seed. This seed might be a tiny piece of shell. Strong waves wash the seed around on the sea floor. The water is warm and full of minerals. As the seed rolls, it picks up new layers. This makes the grain grow bigger.

Some oolites form in lakes too. The Shoofly Oolite in Idaho formed in an old lake.

This rock is very useful to people. Some use it as sand in fish tanks. The grains are small like sugar. This sand helps good bacteria grow. These bacteria help keep the water clean for fish. People also use oolite to build big things. It was used to build the Empire State Building.
