Throughout history, oolite has shaped much of the landscape in different parts of the world. In England, exemplar oolitic limestone formed during the Jurassic period. Another variety, known as Bath Stone, gives the World Heritage City of Bath its unique appearance. In Wales, Carboniferous Hunts Bay Oolite lies beneath much of the southern region. This specific limestone was deposited when shallow seas covered the area during periods of glaciation.

While most oolite forms in the ocean, some of the largest examples are found in freshwater. The Shoofly Oolite in southwestern Idaho is a massive freshwater lakebed oolite. It is a section of the Glenns Ferry Formation. About 10 million years ago, the area was the bed of Lake Idaho. Wave action in the lake washed sediments back and forth in the shallows. This deposited ooids on steep benches near the shore in thicknesses between 2 and 40 feet. When the lake drained between 2 and 4 million years ago, the oolite remained. While other sediments like siltstone and volcanic tuffs eroded away, the more resistant oolite stayed. It eventually weathered into natural sculptures, including small arches and hummocks.

Oolite has also been a vital resource for human construction and industry. In the United States, the town of Oolitic, Indiana, was founded specifically for the limestone trade. It takes its name directly from the rock. Quarries in Oolitic, Bedford, and Bloomington provided the stone for many famous landmarks. This includes the Empire State Building in New York and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. Many buildings on the Indiana University campus are also made from this native limestone. Even the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument in Indianapolis is built mainly of grey oolitic limestone. This shows how much a single type of sedimentary rock can influence the architecture of a nation.

Beyond construction, oolite connects to several different scientific fields. In geology, it helps scientists understand ancient sea levels and climate patterns. In biology, the Shoofly Oolite provides a unique setting for a suite of rare plants. These plants depend on the specific physical and chemical properties of the rock to survive. The Bureau of Land Management protects these areas through careful land use management. Whether it is being used as a biofilter in a small fish tank or forming the foundation of a massive skyscraper, oolite remains a fascinating part of our natural and built world.
