Oolite

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Oolite is a special kind of sedimentary rock. It is made of tiny, round grains called ooids.

These grains look like little spheres. They are built of many thin, concentric layers. Most ooids are made of calcium carbonate. This can be calcite or aragonite. Some ooids are made of other things like clay or iron. If the grains are larger than 2 mm, they are called pisolites.

These rocks form in a very specific way. It begins with a tiny piece of sediment. This might be a small fragment of a shell. We can call this piece a "seed."

Strong currents in warm, shallow water wash the seed around. As it rolls on the seabed, it picks up layers from the water. The water must be supersaturated with minerals. This means the minerals settle out and stick to the seed. This process creates the round, layered shape of the ooid.

Many different places on Earth have oolite. In England, it formed during the Jurassic period. This rock makes up the Cotswold Hills. It also forms the Isle of Portland. The famous Portland Stone comes from this area. In the United States, the Miami Oolite is found in Florida. It formed when shallow seas covered the Everglades. This happened during periods of glaciation. Later, the material was exposed above the ocean surface.

Some oolite forms in fresh water too. The Shoofly Oolite is in southwestern Idaho. It formed 10 million years ago in Lake Idaho. Waves washed sediments on the southwestern shore. This created ooids in layers 2 to 40 feet thick. When the lake drained, the oolite stayed behind. It weathered into natural shapes like small arches. This oolite is part of the Glenns Ferry Formation. It is found on public land near Bruneau.

People use oolite in many ways today. Some use it as sand for home aquariums. The grains are small, between 0.2 and 1.22 mm. This size is good for fish that sift sand. This sand also helps good bacteria grow. These bacteria act as biofilters to clean the water. Oolite is also used for building. The town of Oolitic, Indiana, was named for this trade. Limestone from Indiana helped build the Empire State Building. It was also used for the Pentagon.
