Nodule (geology)

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A nodule is a small and rounded lump of mineral. It often looks like a knot or a mass. These lumps usually have a different makeup than the rock around them. This surrounding rock is called the host strata. Most nodules have a bumpy or warty surface. They are discrete masses within the rock layers. They usually lack any internal structure. They might only show old fossils or original bedding layers.

There are many ways these lumps can form. Some nodules form from the redeposition of silica. Silica is a substance that can come from tiny sea life. This includes remains from sponges or radiolaria. This silica can replace the limestone or chalk. This happens after the sediment is already there. Other nodules, like manganese nodules, form on the seafloor. These are called syndepositional because they form while new sediment is being laid down.

Geologists study these shapes to learn about the Earth. They use special books to define these terms. One important book is the Glossary of Geology. It was edited by Neuendorf, Mehl, and Jackson in 2005. Another key book is Petrology of Sedimentary Rocks by S. Boggs, Jr. in 2009. These books help scientists understand how minerals group together. They help us name the different types of rock we find.

Many different minerals can make up a nodule. You might find pyrite nodules inside of coal. You can also find chert nodules in limestone. Some nodules are made of apatite, which is also called phosphorite. Other types include calcite, anhydrite, and flint. In the deep ocean, nodules can contain manganese. They can also hold cobalt, iron, or nickel. These ocean lumps are often called concretions.

Think of a nodule like a single marble in a bowl of sand. The marble is the nodule and the sand is the host rock. The marble is a different shape and material. You might see this in nature in many places. You can find them in limestone or in marine shale. Some rocks are called nodular if they have many scattered lumps. This means the nodules are loosely packed in a matrix. It is a way to see how minerals move through the Earth.
