Manganese nodules are special mineral growths found on the ocean floor.

They are also called polymetallic nodules because they hold many different metals. These nodules are important because they contain valuable materials like nickel and copper.

People are interested in them as a mining resource. They can be found in both shallow and deep waters. They even exist in some lakes. These nodules have been part of our oceans for a very long time. They likely existed since the Ediacaran period, over 540 million years ago.

These nodules grow in a very slow way.

They form layers of iron and manganese around a tiny center called a nucleus. This nucleus might be a rock fragment or a piece of sunken sea life. There are two main ways they grow. The first way is called hydrogenetic growth. This happens when metals fall from the water above. The second way is called diagenetic growth. This happens when metals come from the sediment on the sea floor.

These two processes can even happen at the same time.

Humans have studied these nodules for a long time. They were first discovered in 1868 in the Kara Sea. This sea is in the Arctic Ocean near Siberia. Later, the HMS Challenger expeditions found them between 1872 and 1876. These trips showed that nodules occur in most oceans around the world. In 1981, a man named Alan A. Archer studied them too. He worked at the London Geological Museum. He estimated there are 500 billion tons of these nodules on the sea floor.

Nodules come in many different shapes and sizes.

Some are tiny and need a microscope to see. Most are about the size of a hen's egg. They can be smooth or have a knobby texture. Some are round, while others are irregular shapes. They can also cover a huge part of the sea floor. In some places, they cover more than 70% of the surface. Large deposits are found in the Clarion–Clipperton zone in the Pacific Ocean. This area is located between Hawaii and the Clipperton Islands.

Understanding these nodules helps us learn about the Earth. They are like a history book of the ocean. The layers inside them can show changes in the climate. They also show how metals move through the water and the mud. Most of these metal deposits are in international waters. However, the Penrhyn Basin is inside the waters of the Cook Islands. Scientists continue to study them to see how they work.
