Ore is a special kind of rock or sediment.

It contains valuable minerals, such as metals. These minerals are found in high amounts compared to the rocks around them. We call this concentration the ore grade. A rock is only called ore if it is worth the cost to mine it.

This means the value of the metal must be higher than the cost to get it out. Some ores are complex because they hold more than one valuable mineral.

Most ore is not pure. It is mixed with unwanted or valueless rocks called gangue.

To get the metal, people use mineral processing. This starts with liberation, which is freeing the ore from the gangue. Then, they use concentration to separate the good minerals. They might use gravity, magnets, or electric methods to do this. The leftover waste is called tailings. These are useless materials that can sometimes harm the environment.

Ore forms through many different geological processes. This way of making ore is called ore genesis.

Some ores come from magma, which is hot, melted rock. For example, kimberlite comes from deep in the mantle to bring us diamonds. Other ores form from fluids. Hydrothermal deposits happen when minerals settle out of hot liquids.

These can form on the seafloor in large mounds.

There are many specific types of ore deposits.

Banded iron formations have the highest concentration of any single metal. They formed on the ocean floor long ago. Another type is the Bushveld Complex in South Africa, which is a source of chromite. Some copper comes from porphyry copper deposits. These are large and round. They usually contain about 0.8% copper by weight. In the ocean, manganese nodules grow very slowly. They grow about one centimeter every several million years.

Finding ore is a careful job that happens in stages.

First, people use prospecting to find where the ore might be. They use maps and special surveys to look for it. Next, they use exploration to see how much ore is there. They might use diamond drilling to check the ore grade and tonnage. Finally, they do a feasibility study. This study helps them decide if the mining project can actually work.
