Mineral processing

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Minerals are often hidden inside rocks called ore. To get them, we use mineral processing. This is the way we separate valuable minerals from waste. The waste parts are called gangue. The good parts we collect are called concentrate. This work makes the ore more valuable for use. It is also known as ore dressing or ore milling.

First, we must break the big rocks into small pieces. This step is called comminution. We use crushers to break the raw ore. These machines use pressure or impact to smash the rock. Next, we use grinders to make the ore into a fine powder. This is often done using a wet process. Then, we use sizing to sort the pieces by size. We use screens that can shake or vibrate to help. This makes sure the particles are ready for the next step.

People have been doing this for a very long time. In ancient China, people used a bloomery to make iron as early as 800 BC. In Central Asia, people used stamp mills near Samarkand by 973. These mills used heavy hammers to break ore. Later, Cornish stamps used waterwheels to power iron hammers. In 1856, the Bessemer process helped turn brittle pig iron into steel. Today, we use new tools like the electric arc furnace.

There are many ways to concentrate the minerals. Gravity separation uses weight to sort things. Heavy minerals sink quickly in water. Lighter ones stay in the stream. This method was used by Egyptians to find gold around 3000 BC. We can also use magnetic separation for magnetic ores. Some processes use chemicals, like froth flotation. This uses bubbles to lift particles to the top.

Modern machines help us do these jobs very well. A Sizer 2000 is a machine used for screening particles. We can also use dense media separation to sort by weight. This helps us use less energy and lowers costs. Understanding how particles move helps us pick the best tool. Whether we use magnets, water, or chemicals, the goal is the same. We want to find the treasures hidden in the earth.
