A stamp mill is a special machine used to crush materials.

It does not grind things like a millstone. Instead, it uses a pounding motion to break things apart. This is very helpful for processing metallic ores. Ore is the rock that holds valuable metals inside. Breaking the rock into smaller pieces is a vital step. This makes it much easier to extract the metal later.

How does this machine work? It uses a set of heavy steel stamps. These stamps are held vertically in a large frame. They can slide up and down inside this frame. A horizontal shaft rotates to make the stamps move. This shaft has parts called cams on it. As the cam moves away from the stamp, the stamp falls. It hits the ore below with a heavy thud.

This process repeats over and over to crush the rock.

People have used similar machines for a very long time. In the Hellenistic era, people knew about cams and water wheels.

By the first century AD, Roman scholars noted water-driven pestles in Italy. Romans used these trip-hammers for pounding grain and working metal. They also used them in mining for gold and silver. These machines were found in places like Wales and the Iberian Peninsula. In the year 973, miners in Samarkand also used stamp mills. By the 11th century, they were common in the Islamic world.

Many different types of mills were built throughout history. In 1850, Cornish stamps were made for tin mining. These used heavy timber and iron heads.

Later, the Californian stamp became very popular. It was shown at the 1894 San Francisco midsummer fair. This version could generate electricity using a wood-fed steam boiler. A single Californian head could crush 1.5 tons of ore. This was more than the 1 ton crushed by Cornish stamps. The first U.S. mill was built in 1829 in North Carolina.

Stamp mills have been used for many different jobs. Some were used to make paper pulp in early paper making. Others were used to process oil-seeds before pressing the oil.

You might know about other ways to crush things too. A ball mill uses metal balls inside a cylinder. A hammer mill is a more modern device. Even today, some artisanal miners in Colombia use electric stamp mills. They remain useful because they are simple and strong.
