A jackhammer is a powerful tool used to break very hard things.

Workers use it to shatter rock, pavement, and concrete. It combines a hammer with a metal piece called a chisel. This tool helps people fix roads or build new things. It is a vital part of construction work. Some people call it a pneumatic drill or a demolition hammer.

How does this tool work so well? The tool operates by driving an internal hammer up and down. First, the hammer is driven down to strike the chisel. This striking action hits the hard surface with great force. Next, the hammer moves back up to its original position. This cycle repeats very quickly to break the material. The effectiveness of the tool depends on how much force is applied.

People have been working to improve these tools for a long time. Samuel Miller patented a steam-powered drill in 1806. Later, Joseph W. Fowle used compressed air for his drill around 1850. This made it the first true pneumatic drill. In 1851, a Frenchman named François Cavé patented a rock drill. Thomas Bartlett also made a rock drill in England in 1854. These inventions helped people build tunnels through big mountains.

There are different ways to power a jackhammer today. Many use compressed air from a machine called a compressor.

Others use electric motors, which are called electro-mechanical tools. These are great for working inside buildings. Very large jackhammers use hydraulic power.

These are often attached to big machines like excavators. They are very strong and can work horizontally.

Using a jackhammer can be a very hard job. The tools are often quite heavy for one person. Sometimes, a two-man team works together to help. One person operates the hammer while the second person assists. They use their combined weight to push the tool down. This is called horizontal jackhammering. Workers also use water or vacuums to control the dust. This keeps the air clean while they work.
