A pencil sharpener is a handy tool used to fix a worn pencil. It works by shaving away the outer surface to reveal a sharp point.

People use them for writing, drawing, or even construction work. Some sharpeners are small enough to fit in a pocket. Others are large machines that sit on a desk or a wall. Without these tools, it would be much harder to keep our writing tools ready for use.

There are many different ways these tools work. A common type is the prism sharpener, which is a small block of metal or plastic.

You insert the pencil into a hole and rotate it against a sharp blade. This blade shaves the wood and the graphite core at the same time. Another way is using planetary sharpeners. These use planetary gears, which are special parts that help turn things. They use helical cutters, which are blades shaped like a spiral, to create a very smooth finish.

Before these tools existed, people had to use knives to whittle pencils.

In 1822, a man named Mr. Boucher in Paris invented a device to sharpen pencils precisely. Later, in 1828, Bernard Lassimonne applied for the world's first patent for a sharpener. In 1833, a device called the Styloxynon was patented in England. This old tool used two sharp files set at a right angle. Many inventors in France and the United States helped make the sharpeners we recognize today.

History shows how these tools grew from simple items to big machines.

In 1855, Walter Kittredge Foster of Maine patented the first American pencil sharpener. By the early 1900s, the Automatic Pencil Sharpener Co. became a very large producer. They made many models like the Climax and the Wizard. Electric sharpeners have been around since at least 1917. Even collectors find them interesting, like Rev. Paul Johnson, who kept over 3,400 sharpeners in his collection.

Today, we have specialized tools for almost every job.

Artists can use a lead pointer to sharpen only the graphite without touching the wood. Carpenters use special sharpeners for their flat pencils so they do not roll away. Some electric models even have an auto-stop feature. This means they sense when the point is long enough and stop on their own. Whether you are in a classroom or an office, there is a sharpener designed just for you.
