You might use one to fix a mistake made with a pencil. Some erasers even work on skin or parchment. They come in many shapes, sizes, and colors.

You can find them as small blocks or as caps on a pencil. Some erasers are shaped like a pencil itself. These are called barrel or click erasers. They have a soft part inside that you can move up and down.

Erasers work by lifting marks away from a surface.

When you rub an eraser, it picks up the graphite or ink. Some erasers are very soft and crumble as you use them. This is true for art gum erasers. The tiny crumbs carry the marks away from the paper. Vinyl erasers are also very popular. They are soft and do not scratch the paper. They work well because they absorb the marks into the vinyl scraps.

People used many things to fix mistakes before rubber erasers existed. Long ago, people used tablets of wax to remove marks. They also used rough stones like sandstone or pumice. Some people even used crustless bread to erase.

In 1770, an English man named Edward Nairne helped make rubber erasers popular. He reportedly discovered rubber could erase by accident. He sold his rubber erasers for three shillings for a small cube. Later, Charles Goodyear found a way to make rubber last longer. He discovered a process called vulcanization in 1839.

There are many special kinds of erasers for different jobs. Hymen Lipman got a patent in 1858 for putting an eraser on a pencil.

Artists often use kneaded erasers, which feel like clay. They can pull these into a point for tiny details. In 1932, Albert J. Dremel invented the electric eraser. This tool uses a motor to spin the eraser very fast. This helps people work without pressing too hard on the paper.

There are even erasers made of fine glass fibers for very hard jobs.

You can see how erasers are part of your everyday life. Most wooden pencils have an eraser attached to one end. You might use a large felt eraser for a chalkboard at school. Some erasers are even used to clean electronic circuit boards. Even scientists have thought of amazing ideas like laser erasers. A man named Arthur Schawlow thought of using a laser to vaporize ink. While that was never sold in stores, it shows how much people want to fix mistakes. Erasers make it easy to keep trying until a drawing or writing is just right.
