A slingshot is a small tool used to launch objects.

It is a hand-powered device. The classic design uses a Y-shaped frame. Two strips of stretchy material attach to the top. These bands are made of natural or synthetic rubber. The other ends lead to a small pouch. This pouch holds the projectile, which is the object being thrown. You hold the frame with one hand. Your other hand pulls the pouch back. This creates power for the object to fly.

Slingshots rely on strong, stretchy materials to work. They need rubber that can snap back quickly. Because of this, they appeared after Charles Goodyear invented vulcanized rubber. He patented this invention in 1844. Before this, people could not make these tools easily. By 1860, young people often used them for mischief. Many people made their own versions at home. They used forked tree branches for the handle. They also cut rubber strips from old inner tubes. These homemade tools were often used for hunting small animals.

History shows many different ways to use a slingshot. Skilled users could hunt quail, rabbits, or squirrels. They might use steel ball bearings or small nails. Some even used them to shoot arrows with a special rest. In 1918, a cast iron model called the Zip-Zip was made. Later, the Wham-O company began making them in 1948. Their model used ash wood and flat rubber bands. The National Slingshot Association was also formed in the 1940s. This group was based in San Marino, California. They held clubs and competitions for people across the country.

Many different people enjoy using slingshots today. You might think only children use them. However, the National Slingshot Association found something surprising. They reported that 80% of sales went to men over 30. Many of these users were professionals. One maker, John Milligan, found that many customers were doctors. People also use them for sports. There are championships in Spain, Italy, and China. In these contests, players stand ten metres away from a target.

Even though they are fun, slingshots can be dangerous. The rubber bands can break during use. This often happens because latex wears down over time. If a band breaks at the top, it can hit your face. This might cause injuries to your eyes or teeth. Some cheap metal frames can also break. This is why people must be very careful. Some places even have laws against certain types of slingshots. For example, New York and parts of Australia have strict rules. It is important to use them safely and follow the law.
