A mangonel is a powerful machine used to launch heavy objects.

Today, many people call this a traction trebuchet. This name describes how the machine gets its power. It does not use heavy weights or twisted ropes to work. Instead, it uses the strength of many people. These machines were very important for sieges in ancient times. They helped armies reach far targets from a safe distance.

The way a mangonel works is quite simple. It uses a long wooden arm on a pivot point. The pivot is a part that lets the arm swing up and down. One end of the arm is short, and the other is long. Ropes are attached to the short end of the arm. A crew of people pulls these ropes all at once. This quick pull makes the long end swing up very fast. A sling at the tip then flings a stone or a log forward.

These machines first appeared in ancient China. They were used as far back as the Warring States period. This was between the 5th and 3rd centuries B.C.E. Some early records of these machines are in a text called the Mozi. The Mozi was written in the 4th century B.C. These machines were often used on city walls for defense. They could even throw logs filled with burning charcoal.

There were many different kinds of mangonels in China. The Wujing Zongyao book lists several specific types. One type was called the Whirlwind, which could turn to face any direction. Another type was the Four-footed, which was used for much heavier objects. A large version could throw a 250-kilogram weight. In the year 1126, the Jin dynasty used 5,000 mangonels during a siege. These machines were very common in Chinese history for a long time.

By the 6th century A.D., the mangonel reached the Mediterranean area. It traveled across Eurasia to many different lands. Groups like the Byzantines, Persians, and Arabs all began using them. The mangonel was often better than older machines like the onager. The onager used twisted fibers to create power. Those twisted cords could break in a dangerous way. The mangonel was simpler to build and faster to reload.
