A trebuchet is a powerful machine used to throw heavy objects.

It was a common tool used during sieges for a long time. This machine remained important until people began using gunpowder. It is much more powerful than a traditional catapult. The design allows it to throw heavy things very far. It works by using a long beam to launch stones or other items.

The machine works like a giant lever. A long beam is attached to an axle on a tall frame. This axle acts as a pivot point for the beam. One end of the beam is much longer than the other. A sling is attached to the long end to hold the projectile. When force is applied to the short end, the beam rotates quickly. This motion swings the sling in a wide arc.

There are two main ways these machines work. The first type is the traction trebuchet. This version uses human power to swing the arm. A crew pulls on ropes to make the beam move. This type first appeared in China by the 4th century BC. It later spread to places like the Byzantine Empire and Persia.

The second type is the counterweight trebuchet. This machine is often much larger and stronger. It uses gravity instead of people to swing the arm. A heavy box is attached to the short end of the beam. This box might be filled with sand, lead, or stones. When the box is released, it falls and pulls the beam up. This type appeared in the Mediterranean around the 12th century.

Trebuchets are very different from other catapults like the onager. An onager has a very violent stop when it fires. This can damage the machine over time. A trebuchet is more durable because the arm continues to rotate smoothly. The sling also helps the projectile travel much further. It spins and adds even more speed to the stone. This clever design makes the trebuchet a very effective machine.
