A crossbow is a special tool used to launch projectiles. It is a ranged weapon that uses a bow to shoot. This bow is called a prod or a lath. The prod is mounted on a main frame called a tiller or a stock.

Instead of long arrows, a crossbow shoots shorter items called bolts or quarrels. These bolts can be quite heavy. They are designed to carry a lot of energy to hit a target. Using a crossbow is different from using a regular bow.

How does a crossbow work so differently from a regular bow? An archer with a regular bow must pull the string and shoot very quickly. This makes it hard to aim for a long time. A crossbow uses a lock to hold the string in place. The lock is a mechanism that keeps the string tight after it is pulled back. This means the user can take as much time as they need to aim.

When the user pulls a trigger, the lock releases. The string then snaps forward to launch the bolt. This allows a group of people to work together. One person can aim while others reload the weapon.

Pulling a heavy crossbow string back is a hard job. This task is called spanning the crossbow. Because the tension is so high, people use tools to help. They might use gears, pulleys, or levers to pull the string. These tools are called windlasses or cranequins.

Some people even sat on the ground to use their whole body. They used their legs and waist to pull the heavy string. These mechanical tools help people who are not as strong as a trained archer. This makes the crossbow a very effective tool for many users.

History shows us that crossbows have been around for a very long time. The earliest known crossbows were invented in ancient China. They appeared during the first millennium BCE. These weapons changed how wars were fought in China.

They were used during the Qin unification wars and the Han campaigns. In Europe, many people called them by names that came from the word ballista. A ballista was an ancient Greek machine used in sieges. Later, medieval Europeans used different types of locks. Some used a rolling nut made of bone, antler, or metal.

Today, we can see how crossbow technology has changed. Modern designs are much faster and more efficient than medieval ones. Firearms have replaced crossbows in most wars. However, crossbows are still very popular for other things. People use them for competitive shooting sports. They are also used for hunting because they are relatively silent.

Some modern crossbows even use telescopic sights to help with aiming. These sights help the shooter see exactly where the bolt will go. This connects the ancient tool to the high-tech tools we use today.
