Ballistics is the science of how objects move after they are launched. These moving objects are called projectiles. A projectile can be something simple like a baseball or something complex like a rocket.

Scientists study how these things fly through space. They also look at how they hit a target. This science is important for many different jobs. It helps people design everything from small tools to huge spacecraft.

There are many ways to launch a projectile. Humans are very good at throwing things by hand.

We use our shoulder muscles to store energy and propel objects. Other tools include the sling and the bow. A sling uses a cord to swing a stone in an arc. A bow uses a flexible stick to shoot arrows.

Ancient people also used catapults to hurl objects over long distances. Modern guns use gas pressure to push a bullet out of a tube.

People have been studying ballistics for a very long time. The oldest stone-tipped projectiles date back 280,000 years to Ethiopia. The first guns appeared in China around 1000 AD. Later, the science became more mathematical. In 1531, the Italian mathematician Niccolò Tartaglia began to study it. He connected straight lines with a circular arc. In 1638, Galileo showed how objects move in a curved path. Finally, Isaac Newton used his laws of motion in 1687 to predict how things fly.

Experts divide ballistics into four main parts. Internal ballistics studies the movement inside the launcher. This includes the time from ignition until a bullet leaves a gun barrel. Transitional ballistics looks at the short moment after the object leaves the muzzle. External ballistics studies the object while it is flying through the air.

This part looks at the path, or trajectory, of the projectile. Terminal ballistics is the study of what happens when the object hits its target. Scientists even use high-speed cameras to see these moments.

This science is used in many real-world ways today. Forensic ballistics helps lawyers and courts solve crimes. They look at bullets and marks to see if a specific gun was used. This is sometimes called ballistic fingerprinting. Another field is called astrodynamics. This uses ballistics to help spacecraft travel through space. It helps us calculate how to reach the Moon and return safely. Ballistics helps us understand how to move things from one place to another.
