Projectile

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A projectile is an object that moves through the air. It starts when an outside force pushes it. After the push, the object moves freely. Gravity pulls it down toward the ground. Air resistance also pushes against its movement. You can see projectiles in many places. They appear in sports and in warfare.

Most projectile weapons use gas to move. This can be compressed gas or expanding gas. Many guns use gases from a chemical reaction. This happens with propellants like smokeless powder. Railguns use electromagnetic fields to move objects. This makes them move very fast from the start. Some projectiles use engines to keep moving. A rocket has an engine for propulsion.

Scientists use math to study these objects. This study is called ballistics. They look at the launch and the flight. They also study the impact. They use equations to find the path. This path is called a trajectory. They can calculate how high an object goes. They can also find how far it travels.

Math helps us find the range. The range is the horizontal distance covered. This range is largest at a 45 degree angle. Scientists also find the time of flight. This is the total time spent in the air. They use gravity to help these math steps. Gravity is about 9.81 meters per second squared. This number helps find the maximum height reached.

We see projectiles in many everyday activities. In sports, muscles provide the push. A person uses muscles to throw a ball. They might throw a javelin or a dart. A stronger push makes the object go faster. It also helps the object travel farther. You might see a baseball or a football. These are all common examples of projectiles.
