Aerodynamics is the study of how air moves. It focuses on how air affects solid objects like airplane wings.

This science is a big part of aeronautics. It helps us understand the motion of gases. Scientists often look at how air flows around a shape. This flow field helps them calculate different forces. These forces include lift, drag, thrust, and weight.

To understand flight, we must look at how air flows. Air has properties like speed, pressure, and density. Speed is also called flow velocity.

We can group air movement into different types. Subsonic flow is when air moves slower than sound. Transonic flow happens when some air moves faster than sound. Supersonic flow is when air moves faster than sound everywhere.

Hypersonic flow is when air moves much faster than sound.

Humans have used air for thousands of years. People used wind for sailboats and windmills.

In 1726, Sir Isaac Newton developed a theory of air resistance. Later, Daniel Bernoulli described a relationship between pressure and speed in 1738. This is known as Bernoulli's principle. In 1799, Sir George Cayley identified the four forces of flight. He showed how weight, lift, drag, and thrust work together.

These discoveries helped people plan for heavier-than-air flight.

Many important people helped build this science. Francis Herbert Wenham built the first wind tunnel in 1871.

Otto Lilienthal was successful with glider flights in 1891. He used thin, curved shapes to create high lift. The Wright brothers flew the first powered airplane in 1903.

Later, the Bell X-1 aircraft broke the sound barrier in 1947. This proved that supersonic flight was possible. Scientists used these steps to move from gliders to fast jets.

Today, we use very advanced tools to study air. Engineers use computer simulations to see how air moves.

This is called computational fluid dynamics. It helps them design entire aircraft using software. They also use wind tunnels to check their work.

These tests make sure the planes fly safely. You can see this science in action every time a plane flies. It connects the math of the past to the fast jets of today.
