physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Aerodynamics is the study of how air moves. It looks at how air affects solid objects. This is very important for things like airplane wings.

There are four main forces in flight. These are lift, drag, thrust, and weight.

Lift is the force that pushes an object up. Drag is the force that pulls it back. Thrust moves the plane forward. Weight pulls it down toward the ground.

Scientists study how air flows. They look at how fast the air moves. This is called flow velocity.

Air speed can change how a plane flies. If air moves slower than sound, it is subsonic. If air moves faster than sound, it is supersonic. When air moves very fast, it is called hypersonic.

People used air for many years. They used it for sailboats and windmills. Later, people built wind tunnels. A wind tunnel is a tool to test air flow.

Today, we use computers to study air. This helps us design better planes.
