Some things can flow. These are called fluids. Fluids include liquids, gases, and plasmas.

Scientists study fluids in two ways. One way is fluid statics. This is the study of fluids at rest. It explains why wood floats on water. It also explains why water stays level in a cup.

The other way is fluid dynamics. This is the study of fluids in motion. It looks at how forces change how a fluid moves. Scientists use this to study how air moves around a plane. This is called aerodynamics. They also use it to study how liquids move. This is called hydrodynamics.

Many math rules help us understand fluids. One set is the Navier-Stokes equations. These equations describe how forces work at a point in a fluid. These math problems are often very hard. Because of this, scientists use computers to find answers. This work is called computational fluid dynamics.

Some fluids are Newtonian fluids. These fluids keep flowing no matter how much you stir them. Water is a good example. Other fluids have viscosity. Viscosity is a property that can change how they flow.
