A trebuchet is a powerful type of catapult used for siege warfare.

It was a common siege engine until the invention of gunpowder. This machine is designed to launch heavy projectiles over long distances. It is more effective than a traditional catapult. The design allows it to throw much larger weights.

This machine is a compound machine. It uses the mechanical advantage of a lever to throw objects. This makes it a highly efficient tool for breaking down walls.

The mechanism of a trebuchet relies on a long beam. This beam is attached to an axle, which acts as a fulcrum. The axle is suspended high above the ground by a stout frame. This allows the beam to rotate through a wide vertical arc. A sling is attached to the tip of the long end of the beam. The long section of the beam is usually four to six times longer than the short end.

When force is applied to the short end, the beam rotates around the axle. This creates rotational acceleration. The sling starts rotating with the beam. However, the sling rotates even farther and faster than the beam itself. This transmits increased speed to the projectile. This process allows the stone to travel at a specific speed and angle.

There are two main types of trebuchets. The first is the traction trebuchet, also called a mangonel. This version uses human power to swing the arm. A crew of people pulls on ropes attached to the short end of the beam. This type first appeared in China by the 4th century BC.

The second type is the counterweight trebuchet, or counterpoise trebuchet. This version uses gravity to function. A very heavy box is attached to the short end of the beam. This box is often filled with lead, sand, or stones. When the box is released, it falls and swings the beam upward.

Both types have unique operational requirements. Traction trebuchets require many men to pull the ropes. It can be difficult to coordinate many people to pull at the same time. Counterweight trebuchets are more complex to engineer. However, they are more predictable for large machines. They require fewer men to operate during a launch. They do require more time to reload. Operators often use winches or treadwheels to raise the massive counterweights. These tools are often aided by a block and tackle system. In a long siege, the slower reload time might not be a problem.

The history of these machines shows a long journey across the world. The traction trebuchet was used in ancient China as early as the 4th century BC. It likely appeared during the Warring States period. Descriptions of these machines are found in the Mohist text, the Mozi.

The technology spread westward to the Byzantine Empire and Persia by the 6th or 7th centuries AD. The counterweight trebuchet appeared later in the Mediterranean. It was used in both Christian and Muslim lands around the 12th century.

The Mongols eventually carried this technology back to China in the 13th century.

The trebuchet is much more durable than other catapults like the onager. An onager is a torsion machine that uses twisted fibers for power. When an onager fires, it has a violent and sudden stop. This puts a lot of stress on the machine's frame. In contrast, the arm of a trebuchet continues to rotate smoothly after the launch. The arm eventually slows down on its own and comes to rest. This design allows for much larger and more powerful constructions. Some beams have been as long as 10 meters. This durability allowed engineers to build massive engines for long sieges.

Projectiles for a trebuchet can be many different things. They are typically large stones. Using dense stone or smooth metal provides the best range and predictability. Sometimes, people used debris, carcasses, or incendiaries. To breach walls, it was important to use stones that would not shatter on impact. Engineers sometimes brought stones from distant quarries to find the right material. By adjusting the sling's release point, operators could fine-tune the range. This was the primary way to aim the machine after it was built.
