The onager was a huge machine used by the Romans.

It was a torsion-powered siege engine. This means it used twisted ropes to create strength. Soldiers used it to destroy walls and break enemy lines. It was a simpler tool than the ballista. This made it easier for people to build and use. The machine was very important for Roman military defense.

How did this machine work? It had a large frame on the ground. A vertical arm was tied to a bundle of ropes. This arm held a cup, a bucket, or a sling.

To fire it, eight men used a windlass to pull the arm down. This put a lot of tension on the ropes. When they released the arm, it swung up quickly. The sling would release the stone and hurl it forward. The arm would then hit a padded beam to stop it.

People gave the machine a very interesting name. In Latin, the name means "wild ass." This name came from the way the machine moved. When it fired, it had a violent kicking action. This looked like the kick of a Syrian wild ass. This animal was a subspecies of the onager. It lived in the eastern part of the Roman Empire. The machine's kick was a very real thing.

Many facts tell us about how big these machines were. An onager could weigh between two and six tons.

Because of the huge recoil, it could not sit on stone walls. The kick was so strong it would dislodge the stones. In the year 378, onagers were used against the Goths at Adrianople. The large stones did not kill anyone there. However, the flying rocks were incredibly frightening to the Goths. The military writer Vegetius said a legion should have ten onagers.

We can see how the onager connects to other tools. It was a single-armed machine, unlike the twin-armed ballista. Later, people added a sling to the throwing arm. This was a smart change for the machine. The sling made the arm feel longer without adding much weight. This helped the onager throw stones a much greater distance. Eventually, a new machine called the mangonel replaced it in the 6th century. This new tool was faster and easier to move around.
