A caltrop is a small tool used to stop movement in a certain area.

It is usually made of four sharp spikes. These spikes are arranged in a special shape called a tetrahedron. This shape is very clever because it is stable. No matter how you throw it, one spike will always point upward. This makes it a very effective trap for anyone walking or riding by.

How the caltrop works is quite simple but very effective. When it is scattered on the ground, it waits for something to step on it. In history, it was used to slow down horses, chariots, and even war elephants. The sharp points could hurt the soft feet of animals like camels. Today, the way it works has changed slightly. Modern versions are often used against vehicles with rubber tires. The spikes can puncture a tire, which makes the vehicle stop.

People have used these tools for thousands of years in many different lands. The ancient Romans had their own names for them. In China, they were known as Jili. Some of these Chinese versions were even shaped like chicken claws. In feudal Japan, they were called makibishi. Some were made of iron, while others were made from dried seeds.

These natural ones could still pierce the thin sandals worn in Japan.

There are many different types of caltrops found in history. During World War II, German forces dropped "crow's feet" from airplanes. These were made of two pieces of metal welded together. They were painted in camouflage colors to hide them on the ground. They came in two sizes with side lengths of 10 or 15 centimeters. In the United States, the Office of Strategic Services made special versions. These had hollow spikes to help air escape from tires more quickly.

Even though they are tools for stopping movement, they appear in other places too. The caltrop is used as a symbol in heraldry, which is a way of showing family history. For example, the Finnish noble family Fotangel used three caltrops in their family arms. Some military groups also use the shape as their symbol. The US Army's III Corps uses the caltrop because of its history with horse cavalry. It is also the symbol for the United States Marine Corps' 3rd Division.
