The onager was a large machine used by the Romans.

It was used to throw heavy stones. These machines helped destroy walls. They also helped scare enemy lines.

The name onager means "wild ass." This is because the machine kicked like a wild ass.

A wild ass is a type of animal.

How did the onager work? It used torsion power. This means it used the strength of twisted ropes. A long arm was tied to these ropes.

Eight men had to pull the arm down using a windlass. A windlass is a tool used to turn a rope. Once the arm was pulled down, it was released. The arm would swing up and throw a rock.

The onager was very heavy. It weighed between two and six tons. It also had a very strong recoil. Recoil is the kick a machine makes when it fires. This kick was so big that the machine could not sit on stone walls. If it did, it might knock the stones loose. Later, people added a sling to the arm. A sling helped the machine throw rocks much further.
