A catapult is a machine that throws things.

It can launch stones, arrows, or even fire. These machines do not use gunpowder. Instead, they use stored energy to work.

Most catapults work by building up power. People might pull back a bow or twist a rope. This is called tension or torsion. When the machine is let go, that power pushes the object. This sudden release sends the payload flying far away.

Many different kinds of catapults were used in history. A ballista was like a giant crossbow. It shot large arrows in a flat line.

Another kind is the mangonel. It used a bucket on an arm to throw heavy rocks. Some mangonels were called onagers. The name comes from a Greek word for a wild ass. This is because the machine had a kicking motion.

Some used people to pull the arm. Others used a heavy weight to swing it. One famous trebuchet was named Warwolf. It was used to break a castle wall in 1304.
