A siege tower is a huge machine used in ancient and medieval warfare.

Its main job was to help soldiers reach high defensive walls. These towers were usually rectangular and stood on four wheels. They were often built to be as tall as the walls they faced. This allowed archers to stand on top and shoot down at defenders. To keep the wooden towers from catching fire, builders covered them in animal skins or iron.

Using a siege tower was a very careful process. Because they were so heavy, teams often built them right at the site of the battle. They were used when ladders or battering rams could not work. Once the tower rolled close to a wall, a gangplank would drop down. This acted like a bridge for soldiers to rush onto the walls.

Some towers even had battering rams attached to them. These could bash through heavy gates or stone walls.

People have used these towers for thousands of years. Evidence from the Bronze Age shows they were used in Anatolia and Egypt.

In the 9th century BC, the Neo-Assyrian Empire used them under a leader named Ashurnasirpal II. Later, the Kushite army used them in Egypt during the 8th century BC. Even in ancient China, records from the Han dynasty mention them.

They were a common tool for many different empires across the world.

Some towers were truly enormous. One famous Greek tower was called the Helepolis, which means "The Taker of Cities."

Built in 305 BC, it had nine stories and was manned by 200 soldiers. These massive machines needed level ground to move well. If the ground was uneven, they might get stuck. Defenders sometimes flooded the ground to create a muddy moat. This would trap the heavy tower in the mud so it could not move.

As time went on, new weapons changed how wars were fought. In the medieval period, towers became even more complex with many archers inside. However, the invention of large cannons eventually made them obsolete. Cannons could break walls much more easily than a tower could. Today, we see modern versions of this idea in special police tools. Some vehicles use mechanical ladders to reach the upper floors of buildings. These small, moving ladders are like the tiny cousins of the ancient siege tower.
