A siege is a military blockade of a city or a fortress. The goal is to conquer the place through a long wait or a strong attack. This type of fighting is called siege warfare. One group stays in a strong, defensive spot called a garrison. The other group is the attacker, and they are said to be laying siege. Because the two sides are so close, they often use diplomacy to talk. Diplomacy is a way to negotiate or make deals to end the fight.

To start a siege, the attacker must surround the target. This is a tactic known as investment. It blocks supplies and help from reaching the people inside. Attackers might build earthworks like trenches and ramps to encircle the area. This is called circumvallation. Sometimes, attackers build another ring of forts to protect themselves from outside help. This second ring is called contravallation.

Attackers use many tools to break through walls. They might use ladders to climb up the sides. They also use siege engines to throw heavy objects. These machines include catapults, ballistae, and trebuchets. Some attackers use battering rams to break through gates. Another method is called mining. This is when soldiers dig a tunnel under a wall to make it collapse.

Siege warfare has been part of history for a very long time. In the ancient Near East, the Sumerian city of Uruk had famous walls. In the 15th century BC, the Shang dynasty in China built huge walls at Ao. By the 9th century BC, Hazael of Aram Damascus used a trench system to siege Gath. Later, in 701 BC, Sennacherib of Assyria besieged Lachish in Israel. During the Renaissance, famous thinkers like Leonardo da Vinci designed new types of fortifications.

Things have changed a lot as technology improved. In the Napoleonic era, powerful cannons made old walls less useful. In the 20th century, the way people fight changed again. Modern warfare uses huge amounts of power that can hit a target from far away. Because of this, traditional sieges are not as common today. Most modern sieges involve smaller situations, like people resisting arrest or holding hostages.
