The Siege of Antioch was a major event during the First Crusade. It took place in Syria between 1097 and 1098.

Antioch was a very important city for the Crusaders. It sat on a path toward Jerusalem. The city was located in the Orontes Valley. It was surrounded by huge walls with 400 towers. These walls were built a long time ago. They were made during the time of Emperor Justinian I. Because the city was so strong, it could control food and supplies. This made it a key goal for the Crusader armies.

Taking the city was a very hard job. The Crusaders had to follow several steps to reach it. First, they had to control nearby places like Artah. They also needed the Iron Bridge over the Orontes River.

Robert of Flanders and Adhemar of Le Puy led a charge across the bridge. On October 21, 1097, the Crusaders arrived at the north wall. They split into different groups to camp around the city. Some leaders like Bohemond of Taranto set up camps near specific gates. They built forts like Malregard to stay safe from arrows. The siege lasted for many months as they waited for the city to fall.

Life during the siege was very difficult for the Crusaders. The city was led by a governor named Yaghi-Siyan. He had stored plenty of food inside the walls.

Outside the walls, the Crusaders began to run out of food. By early 1098, one in seven Crusaders was dying from hunger. Some people even left the army because things were so bad. They had to travel far away to find food. This made them easy targets for attacks from the city. Even though they struggled, they stayed to finish their mission.

There were two different sieges that happened one after the other. The first siege ended on June 3, 1098, when the Crusaders took the city.

However, the Crusaders were soon trapped themselves. A new army led by Kerbogha arrived to attack them. This second siege lasted from June 7 to June 28, 1098. The Crusaders had to fight a big battle to survive. They went out of the city to meet Kerbogha's forces. The Crusaders won this battle, and the defenders in the citadel surrendered.

After the fighting ended, the city changed hands. Bohemond of Taranto became the leader of the area. He started a new land called the Principality of Antioch.

This was a big change from the Seljuk Empire that ruled before. Many people write about these events in old books. Historians use letters and stories to learn what happened. These stories help us understand how real people lived during the Crusades. Antioch remained a very important place in history because of these events.
