A repeating crossbow is a special tool from China.

It is different from a regular crossbow. A normal crossbow fires about two bolts every minute. This tool can fire 7 to 10 bolts in just 15 to 20 seconds. It was used for many years in Chinese history. People often used it to defend homes from robbers.

The tool works by doing many steps in one motion. The most common design has a magazine on top. A magazine is a box that holds the bolts. Gravity helps the bolts fall down into the right place. The user holds the tool against their hip. They push and pull a lever back and forth. This motion catches the drawstring and loads a bolt. Then, a small part called a nut pushes the string to shoot.

History tells us this tool is very old. It was invented during the Warring States period in China. A man named Mr. Qin from the State of Chu is said to have made it. We know this because of items found in a burial site. This site is called Tomb 47 at Qinjiazui in Hubei Province. The items there are from the 4th century BC. Some people think a leader named Zhuge Liang made it. However, he actually only made improvements to it later on.

There were many different ways to build these tools. The ancient version from the State of Chu used a pistol grip. It had a special metal trigger that looked like a crab's claw. The Ming dynasty design was much more common. In Korea, the Joseon Dynasty made even larger versions. These Korean models used a pivoting recurve bow. This helped the tool shoot further and with more strength. Some versions even shot two or three bolts at once.

Even though it was fast, the tool was not very strong. The bolts were small and light. They did not have much power against heavy armor. Because of this, it was not a main military weapon. People often used it for tiger hunting or defending houses. Sometimes, people put poison like aconite on the bolts. This made the small wounds more dangerous. It shows how people used clever tools to solve hard jobs.
