A repeating firearm is a special tool designed for many shots.

Most old guns were single-shot models. This means they could only fire one round of ammunition at a time. After one shot, the user had to reload the gun. A repeater is different because it stores many cartridges inside. It can use a magazine, a small holder for shots. It might also use a cylinder, which is a rotating part. Some large guns even use a belt to hold ammunition.

This design lets the gun fire many times in a row.

How does a repeater work so quickly? It uses a moving action to move each cartridge. The moving parts push a cartridge into the battery position. This position is where the shot sits inside the chamber. It must also align perfectly with the bore, which is the hollow path inside the barrel.

This process happens one step at a time. The moving part brings a new shot into place after the last one fires. This allows the user to discharge the weapon in quick succession. It is much faster than manual reloading. This way of working makes the gun much more useful for sustained firing.

People have been trying to build these for a long time. Inventors made repeating flintlock guns as early as the 1600s. One famous example is the Kalthoff repeater from around 1656.

An even earlier type of gun used air instead of powder. The Girardoni air rifle was designed by Bartolomeo Girardoni around 1779. This air rifle was very famous during the Lewis and Clark Expedition. It was one of the first guns to use a tubular magazine. This helped it fire many times without stopping.

Many famous names helped make repeaters common. The Colt company made revolvers popular starting in the mid-1830s.

Later, repeating rifles were used during the American Civil War in the 1860s. In the 1880s, people began inventing repeating pistols. Famous inventors like John Browning and Georg Luger helped with these designs.

Many different models appeared in the 1800s. For example, the Henry rifle was patented in 1831 by Francois-Antoine Henry. These new tools were much better than the single-shot guns used before. They allowed for a much higher rate of fire.

You can see how these ideas led to the tools we know today. Modern machines like the Gatling gun use rotating barrels to fire.

These guns use belts or magazines to keep feeding shots. Even huge modern tools like the Vulcan use this same idea.

They use moving actions to move ammunition very fast. Whether it is a small pistol or a large gun, the goal is the same. The goal is to fire many times without a long pause. This makes the tool much more efficient than a single-shot version.
