An automatic firearm is a special kind of tool that can fire many rounds very quickly. These tools are designed to load and fire shots on their own. This happens when the trigger is held down.

There are different ways these tools work. A fully automatic gun fires continuously as long as the trigger is held. A semi-automatic gun only fires one round for every single trigger pull. Some tools use a burst mode. This mode fires a small group of rounds, often three, before stopping. This helps keep the shots more accurate during use.

How does the tool work so fast? It uses the energy from a previous shot to help the next one. This is a clever way to keep the cycle going. First, the tool harvests excess energy from the last discharge. This energy feeds a new round into the chamber. Then, a hammer or a striker hits the primer. This impact ignites the propellant and sends the projectile out. This cycle of loading and firing happens automatically. It can use a magazine or a belt to get more ammo.

There are many different types of these firearms. Machine guns are heavy and often use a belt of ammunition. They are used for suppressive fire.

Submachine guns are shorter and use pistol cartridges. Some people use personal defense weapons because they are light but powerful. There are also automatic rifles and machine pistols. Machine pistols are shaped like handguns but can fire in bursts. Some even have a foldable stock to help with aiming.

Different tools have different speeds, which is called the cyclic rate. The MG34 is a famous general purpose machine gun from the WWII era. It uses a recoil-operated mechanism to work. This gun can fire between 800 and 900 rounds per minute. Its theoretical cyclic rate is even higher, between 1,000 and 1,200 rounds per minute. However, firing too fast can cause problems. The barrel and other parts get very hot from continuous fire. The MG34 might fail after just one minute of continuous fire due to this heat.

Because these tools are powerful, there are many rules about them. In most developed countries, only the military or police use them. In the United States, laws like the National Firearms Act of 1934 control them. The Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986 also changed things. This act banned most civilians from owning new machine guns. To own a legal one, a person must pass a background check. They must also pay a $200 federal tax to the ATF. This tax buys a revenue stamp to prove it is legal.
