Some tools can fire many rounds in a row. These are called automatic firearms.

These tools use leftover power from one shot to help the next. This power moves a new round into the chamber. Then, a hammer hits the primer to start the next shot.

If you keep the trigger down, a fully automatic gun fires many times. A semi-automatic gun only fires one round for each trigger pull. Some guns use a burst mode. This means they fire a small group of rounds, like three, at a time.

There are many types of these tools. Machine guns are heavy and often use a belt of ammo. Submachine guns are small and use pistol rounds. There are also automatic rifles and machine pistols.

Firing many rounds makes the metal parts very hot. If the gun fires for too long, it might break. For example, an MG34 gun can fire 1,200 rounds per minute. But it may fail after only one minute of fire. This is because the barrel gets too hot.
