A repeating firearm is a tool built to fire many times.

Most guns only hold one shot. You must reload them after every fire. A repeater is different. It can store many shots inside. It uses a magazine, which is a small holder for shots.

Some guns use a cylinder, which is a rotating part. Others use a belt to hold shots. A moving part moves each shot into place. This lets the gun fire in a quick set of steps.

Early repeaters were hard to make. Some were invented in the 1600s. One was the Kalthoff repeater.

The first gun to use a magazine in war was an airgun. It was the Girardoni air rifle. It was made around 1779. Later, revolvers became very popular. The Colt company made them in the mid-1830s. In the 1860s, people used repeating rifles in the American Civil War. These guns let people fire many shots without stopping. This made them much faster than old guns.
