How does a repeater work so quickly? It uses a moving action to move each cartridge. The moving parts push a cartridge into the battery position. This position is where the shot sits inside the chamber. It must also align perfectly with the bore, which is the hollow path inside the barrel. 
People have been trying to build these for a long time. Inventors made repeating flintlock guns as early as the 1600s. One famous example is the Kalthoff repeater from around 1656.
Many famous names helped make repeaters common. The Colt company made revolvers popular starting in the mid-1830s. 

You can see how these ideas led to the tools we know today. Modern machines like the Gatling gun use rotating barrels to fire. These guns use belts or magazines to keep feeding shots. Even huge modern tools like the Vulcan use this same idea.

Despite these early inventions, widespread use came much later. Revolvers became very popular sidearms after the Colt company introduced them in the mid-1830s. 
Many specific designs emerged throughout the 1800s. In 1831, Francois-Antoine Henry patented the Henry rifle, a 14-shot flintlock. In 1838, Americans Bailey, Ripley, and Smith patented a percussion rifle. This rifle used a gravity-operated tubular magazine in the stock. This magazine could hold up to 15 reusable steel cartridge-chambers. Other inventors experimented with complex systems. For instance, the Church and Bartholomew gun from 1813 used three separate magazines. This design could hold up to 42 charges and fire 25 shots per minute. These varied experiments helped refine the technology used in modern firearms.
Today, the principles of the repeater are seen in many different scales. The concept of moving ammunition through a mechanism is used in everything from small pistols to massive weapons. Large-scale rotary-barrel systems like the Gatling gun use the same feeding principles. Even modern high-speed systems like the Vulcan use these ideas.
