Early handguns worked in many different ways to fire. The first hand cannons used a gunpowder chamber called a Yoshi.

A small touch hole let a fuse ignite the powder. Later, the matchlock used a burning cord called a slow match. This match was lowered into a pan to start the fire. The wheellock was the first self-igniting type. It used a spinning steel wheel to make sparks, much like a modern cigarette lighter.

History shows how these tools changed over many centuries. The oldest known bronze barrel handgun is the Heilongjiang hand cannon from 1288.

In 1432, the Joseon dynasty made the se-chongtong. This was the world's first handgun. It could fire a standardized arrow up to 250 meters away.

This caplock mechanism replaced the flintlock. It used a chemical called mercury fulminate to create an explosion. When a hammer hit the cap, flames traveled through a tube to the barrel. This worked better in bad weather than older guns.

The oldest known bronze barrel handgun is the Heilongjiang hand cannon from 1288. This weapon was 34 cm long and weighed 3.55 kg. It featured a bulbous base called a Yoshi, which served as the gunpowder chamber. The walls of this chamber were extra thick to withstand explosive pressure. To fire the weapon, a fuse was inserted into a small touch hole to ignite the powder. This explosion propelled the projectile through the barrel.

In 1432, the Joseon dynasty introduced the se-chongtong, the world's first handgun.

This weapon had a total length of 13.8 cm. It utilized a specialized handle called a cheolheumja, which allowed the user to change barrels quickly. The se-chongtong fired a standardized arrow known as chase-jeon. It had a maximum fatal range of approximately 250 meters. Although the Joseon government initially viewed it as a failure due to its short range, it became a popular personal defense weapon. It was used by soldiers, civilians, and even spies known as chetamja.

As technology progressed, new ignition mechanisms were invented to make firing easier. The matchlock appeared in Europe during the mid-15th century.

It used a curved lever called a serpentine to hold a burning slow match. When the lever was pulled, the match dropped into a flash pan to ignite the powder. Around 1500, the wheellock was developed as the first self-igniting firearm. The wheellock used a spring-loaded steel wheel to spin against pyrite. This action created intense sparks to ignite the gunpowder. This mechanism was much more complex and expensive to manufacture than the matchlock.

By the early 17th century, the flintlock mechanism became a dominant technology.

A flintlock uses a piece of flint to strike a steel surface, creating sparks. These pistols varied greatly in size. Some were less than 15 cm long and could fit in a pocket. Others were over 51 cm long and were carried in holsters on a horse. Some specialized versions, like English duelling pistols, were designed for extreme reliability and accuracy. They were often sold in wooden cases with many accessories.

In the early 19th century, the caplock, or percussion lock, replaced the flintlock.

This change was driven by Reverend Alexander John Forsyth, who patented an ignition system in 1807. He wanted to prevent the puff of smoke from a flintlock from startling birds. The caplock mechanism uses a hammer to strike a small percussion cap. This cap contains mercury fulminate, a chemical made from mercury, nitric acid, and alcohol. When the hammer hits the cap, the chemical explodes. The resulting flames travel through a nipple into the barrel to ignite the main charge. This system was more reliable and resistant to weather than previous designs.
