It has a spinning wheel called a cylinder. This cylinder has many small holes called chambers. Each chamber holds one cartridge. Most revolvers hold six cartridges. People often call them six-shooters or wheel guns.

Before you fire, you must move the hammer. Pulling the hammer back makes the cylinder spin. This moves a new chamber into line with the barrel. Then, the bullet can fly through the bore. This way is faster than old guns. Old guns could only fire one shot at a time. You had to reload after every single shot.

Samuel Colt made the first modern practical revolver.

He used a special tool to spin the wheel. In 1873, he made the famous Single Action Army. It was also called the Peacemaker. Later, makers added new ways to reload. Some used a swing-out cylinder. This lets the wheel move to the side. This makes it easy to put in new cartridges. Many guards and hunters still use revolvers today.
